Mathare Social Justice Center
For Santuri Electronic Music Academy, teaching students is not just about music production - it's also about giving them a sense of community.
As part of a campaign called Art for Social Change, SEMA partnered with a community organisation called Mathare Social Justice Centre (MSJC). Aside from human rights work, popular education, podcasting, and after-school programs for kids, MSJC have also led ecological justice initiatives to strengthen their community.
During SEMA's intermediate program, SEMA students and staff worked hand in hand with Mathare youth to clean up corners of the neighbourhood that have become dumping sites, to plant trees and medicinal plants, and to paint murals. This was a really fun way to get the students engaged while sensitising youth on ecological matters. Watch these video recaps of the days: here, shot by Emma Nzioka!
