SUPPORT A SEMA SCHOLAR
Recently Santuri switched to a model of paid courses, offering our highly-rated production and DJ training to the wider public. This is a huge step in our development, and we are proud to build an institution that provides cutting-edge music education at an affordable rate.
However, as we are ostensibly a social enterprise working to provide opportunities for those that would not normally have access to them, this new model poses a challenge. We want to make sure that we don’t drift from our mission (see below for the statement), and continue to offer opportunities to East African artists with limited means. As such we have launched a scholarship project where we have partnered with key social justice organizations in Nairobi to provide places on our new courses.
Our partners include Mathare Social Justice Center (MSJC), Made In Kibera (MiK), and Sim Sima. We work with these organizations to identify candidates within their communities, and support the scholars as they progress through the program.
We are only able to do this through contributions from our wider community to support the scholars - so far we are indebted to friends and partners Catalyst Institute in Berlin, East African Records and private donors who have supported 5 students in their studies so far.
We currently have 4 more scholars enrolled in our DJ 101 class, and we are currently seeking funds to support them through the program. Our previously earmarked funds for them fell through.
The cost for one student to attend SEMA for 6 weeks is $400, which covers:
- 60+ hours of teaching
- Access to computer and music making hardware and software
- Additional one-on-one tutoring
- Travel costs to class and back
- Lunch
-
Administrative costs
Are you or your organisation able to help? If so, please contact david@santuri.org and we can discuss further and share details about each scholar and their stories.
Your support would of course mean a huge amount to the students, our partners in battling inequality, and Santuri.
